100% Dairy-Free Protein Bars

Protein From Seeds, Not Whey

No Milk, No Whey, No Casein

All four Forward Bar flavors are dairy-free. The protein comes from hemp seeds, pumpkin seeds and almonds rather than whey or casein, and the chocolate chips use fair-trade cacao butter — a plant fat — instead of milk chocolate. No milk, milk protein isolate, non-fat milk powder, butter oil or lactose in any bar.

Dairy-free because of how it's built, not because something was taken out.

Where the Protein Comes From

No whey, no casein: most bars reach a high protein number using milk protein, because it is the cheapest route. The Forward Bar earns its 12g from whole hemp seeds, pumpkin seeds, almonds and flax seeds instead — which is why every flavor is dairy-free without needing a substitute for anything.

How to Tell a Bar Is Actually Dairy-Free

The ingredient list is more useful than the front of the pack. Three things to check — and one more once you reach the chocolate.

No whey or caseinProtein from hemp, pumpkin and almonds
No milk solidsSweetened with dates and raw honey
Cacao butter, not dairyA plant fat pressed from the cocoa bean
No whey or caseinProtein from hemp, pumpkin and almonds
No milk solidsSweetened with dates and raw honey
Cacao butter, not dairyA plant fat pressed from the cocoa bean

The three things to check

1. The protein source, first. If the protein comes from whey, casein or milk protein isolate, the bar contains dairy however it is marketed. Most protein bars fail here, because whey is the cheapest route to a high protein number. A genuinely dairy-free bar has to earn its protein elsewhere — usually seeds, nuts or legumes.

2. Treat “non-dairy” with suspicion. Non-dairy is not a regulated term in the United States, and products carrying it can still contain milk derivatives. “Dairy-free” is a clearer signal, and the ingredient list is clearer still.

3. Lactose-free is not dairy-free. Lactose-free means the lactose has been broken down. The milk protein is still there — which matters a great deal if you are avoiding dairy for allergy reasons rather than for digestion.

Then check the chocolate. A bar can be dairy-free everywhere except its coating. Look for cocoa or cacao butter rather than milk chocolate — cacao butter is the fat pressed from the cocoa bean and contains no dairy, despite the name.

The Full Ingredient List

Seven ingredients form the base of every flavor: pumpkin seeds, hemp seeds, dates, almonds, raw unfiltered honey, flax seeds and psyllium husk.

Then each flavor adds its own: fair-trade cacao chocolate chips for Chocolate Chip and Mint Chip, peppermint oil for Mint Chip, chai spice and vanilla extract for Vanilla Chai, and shredded coconut with lemon oil and zest for Lemon Coconut.

Every ingredient is organic, and the bars are made in a certified organic facility.

Dairy ingredient Why bars use it In Forward Bars
Whey protein isolate / concentrate The cheapest way to reach a high protein number None
Casein / calcium caseinate Slow-digesting protein, common in “night-time” bars None
Milk protein isolate Blended with whey to lift total protein None
Non-fat dry milk Bulk, sweetness and a softer texture None
Milk chocolate / chocolate coating Cheaper and sweeter than dark chocolate None
Butter oil / butterfat Mouthfeel in coatings and caramels None
Lactose A carrier for flavorings, and sweetness None

Nutrition, per bar

Per 54g bar. These figures are identical across all four flavors; where they differ, the range is shown.

Per bar (54g) Amount % Daily Value
Calories 260–280
Protein 12g 24%
Dietary fiber 4g 14%
Total fat 18–22g 23–28%
Saturated fat 2–4.5g 10–23%
Trans fat 0g
Total carbohydrate 17–18g 6–7%
Total sugars 12–13g
of which added sugars 2g 4%
Sodium 0mg 0%
Cholesterol 0mg 0%
Iron 2.7mg 15%
Potassium 470mg 10%
Calcium 52mg 4%
Vitamin D 0mcg 0%

Under FDA thresholds that makes every Forward Bar an excellent source of protein and a good source of fiber, iron and potassium — with no sodium and no cholesterol. Of the 12–13g of total sugar, only 2g is added; the rest comes from the dates.

Dairy-free questions, answered

Are Forward Bars dairy-free?

Yes. All four flavors are dairy-free. No milk, whey, casein, milk protein isolate, non-fat milk powder, butter oil or lactose appears in any bar.

Do they contain whey or casein?

No. The 12g of protein per bar comes from hemp seeds, pumpkin seeds and almonds. No Forward Bar uses whey, casein or any protein powder, isolate or concentrate.

Is cacao butter a dairy ingredient?

No. Cacao butter is the fat pressed from the cocoa bean — a plant fat. Despite the name it contains no dairy. The chocolate chips in the Chocolate Chip and Mint Chip bars are made from fair-trade cacao, upcycled dates and fair-trade cacao butter.

Are Forward Bars vegan?

No. They are vegetarian but not vegan, because they contain raw unfiltered honey. Everything else in the bars is plant-derived.

Is “non-dairy” the same as dairy-free?

No. “Non-dairy” is not a regulated term in the United States and products using it can still contain milk derivatives. Read the ingredient list rather than the front of the pack.

Is lactose-free the same as dairy-free?

No. Lactose-free means the lactose has been broken down, but the milk protein remains. That distinction matters if you are avoiding dairy because of an allergy rather than for digestion.

Do Forward Bars contain nuts?

Yes — almonds, a tree nut and a major allergen under US labeling law. Check the pack if you have a nut allergy.

Are the bars gluten-free and soy-free?

None of the ingredients contains gluten or soy. Check the pack for current certification status.
