Flax Seeds: Plant Omega-3, Lignans and Two Kinds of Fibre

Flax seeds do three separate jobs in this bar, and they are the ingredient most often included at a token level elsewhere so a brand can put “omega-3” on the front of the pack.

Flax is the richest plant source of alpha-linolenic acid. It is also the most concentrated dietary source of lignans, and it supplies both soluble and insoluble fibre — which behave differently in the gut.

One detail matters more than any of that: whole flax seeds pass through largely intact. Grinding is not optional if you want the nutrition.

Ground, not whole — and why that is not a detail

The flax seed coat is tough enough to resist digestion. Whole seeds can pass through the digestive tract essentially unchanged, which means the ALA and lignans inside never become available.

This is well established, and it is the single most useful thing to know about flax. A bar with visible whole flax seeds is making a label claim it may not be delivering. Our flax is milled.

ALA, lignans and fibre — three different things

ALA is the plant form of omega-3. As with hemp, we will not equate it with the EPA and DHA from marine sources: the body's conversion of ALA to those long-chain forms is limited, a point the NIH Office of Dietary Supplements makes directly.

Lignans are polyphenols, and flax is the most concentrated common dietary source. They are metabolised by gut bacteria into compounds studied for weak oestrogenic activity. The research is genuinely interesting and genuinely unsettled, and a snack bar is not the place to resolve it.

Fibre. Flax provides both types. Soluble fibre forms a gel that slows digestion; insoluble fibre adds bulk. Both contribute to the fullness people report from this bar.

Storage, because flax oxidises

ALA is a polyunsaturated fat, which makes it prone to oxidation once the seed is ground. That is a real formulation constraint, not a footnote.

It is one reason the bar is made in smaller runs and why milling and packaging timing matters. If you buy ground flax separately, keep it cold and use it reasonably quickly.

Flax Seeds: common questions

Should flax seeds be ground?

Yes. Whole flax seeds have a tough coat and can pass through the digestive tract intact, leaving the ALA and lignans inside unavailable. Ground or milled flax is the usable form.

Is flaxseed omega-3 the same as fish oil?

No. Flax provides ALA, the plant form. Fish oil provides EPA and DHA. The body converts ALA to EPA and DHA only to a limited extent, so they are not interchangeable.

How much fibre does flax add?

Flax contributes both soluble and insoluble fibre. For the total fibre in one Forward Bar, see the nutrition panel on the ingredients page.
