Short answer: The Forward Bar and KIND Protein Crunchy Peanut Butter both have 12g of protein and both lead with nuts. KIND has more fiber (6g vs. 4g) and costs less per bar. On our five-point label test, The Forward Bar meets all five points and KIND meets one: KIND adds soy protein isolate, glucose syrup, sugar, palm kernel oil and chicory root fiber, while The Forward Bar gets its protein from whole seeds and almonds, has less added sugar (2g vs. 5g), no sodium, about 2g of omega-3 ALA, and is USDA Certified Organic.
KIND Protein is one of the most searched protein bars, and it starts from a good place: whole peanuts are the first ingredient. The difference is where the rest of the label goes. Here is a side-by-side look at where they tie and where they don't.
What to Look For in a Protein Bar
We use the same five-point label test as our RXBAR and Barebells comparisons. When you evaluate any protein bar, look past the front of the pack and check five things on the ingredient list:
- Protein source — whole foods (nuts, seeds), or a processed protein powder or isolate (whey, soy, pea, or egg white)?
- Sweetener — whole fruit like dates, or refined syrups and sugar alcohols?
- Fats — from whole nuts and seeds, or refined seed oils?
- Flavoring — real food, or "natural flavors" (an unregulated catch-all)?
- Micronutrients — from the ingredients themselves, from a synthetic premix, or not at all?
A genuinely clean bar should read like food you recognize. Now let's compare.

Where They Tie, and Where KIND Wins
Credit where it's due. Both bars deliver 12g of protein, both put whole nuts first on the ingredient list, and their calories land in the same range (250 vs. 260–280). KIND Protein also has more fiber per bar (6g vs. 4g) and costs a lot less: about $1.40 a bar versus about $4.44, or about $3.78 on subscription.
What the price difference pays for is on the label: USDA Certified Organic ingredients, protein from whole seeds instead of an isolate, no syrups or added oils, and nearly half a day's magnesium in one bar.
Where They Differ: The Protein Source
KIND markets the line as "Protein from Real Food" and says each bar has "12g plant protein." Peanuts are the first ingredient, but the 12g also comes from soy protein isolate, the third ingredient, plus peanut flour and nonfat milk powder. The Forward Bar's 12g comes entirely from whole pumpkin seeds, hemp seeds and almonds, with no powder or isolate.
Where They Differ: Sweeteners and Fats
KIND sweetens with three ingredients, honey, glucose syrup and sugar, for 5g of added sugar, and adds palm kernel oil and peanut oil. The Forward Bar sweetens with dates and a little raw honey, for 2g of added sugar, and adds no oil; its fat comes from the nuts and seeds themselves.
The Forward Bar's total sugar is higher (12g vs. 7g) because dates are a whole fruit. The number health guidance focuses on is added sugar: the Dietary Guidelines for Americans and the American Heart Association both set limits on added sugars, not on sugar from whole fruit. On that measure, KIND has 2.5 times as much.
Where They Differ: Fiber
KIND wins on fiber grams, but part of that 6g is chicory root fiber, an isolated fiber added to the bar. It is the second ingredient on the label, and US labels list ingredients by weight, so the bar contains more chicory root fiber than soy protein isolate, honey or glucose syrup. The Forward Bar's 4g comes from psyllium, seeds and dates.
Added fibers like chicory root (inulin) are a common cause of gas and bloating. See our guide to protein bars that don't cause bloating.
Where They Differ: Organic Status, Minerals, Omega-3 and Sodium
The Forward Bar is USDA Certified Organic and gets its minerals from the seeds: 45% DV magnesium and 25% DV zinc per bar. KIND Protein is not organic, and its label lists iron at 6% DV, potassium at 4% DV and calcium at 2% DV.
The Forward Bar also has about 2g of omega-3 ALA from whole flax and hemp seeds and 0mg of sodium. KIND's label does not list omega-3s and shows 135mg of sodium. Saturated fat is similar (2–4.5g depending on flavor vs. KIND's 4g), but Forward's comes only from whole nuts and seeds, while KIND's includes palm kernel oil.
Which Bar Keeps You Full Longer?
Both bars pair 12g of protein with fat and fiber, which is what slows digestion. KIND has 18g of fat and 6g of fiber; The Forward Bar has 18–22g of fat (varies by flavor) and 4g of fiber, all from whole nuts, seeds and dates. Neither is a meal replacement.
Where The Forward Bar fits best:
- Breakfast on the go, with protein, fat and whole-food carbs in one bar.
- Around a workout, as an everyday whole-food snack rather than a protein-maximizing recovery bar.
- The 3pm slump, when you want something that tastes like food rather than a formula.
Is KIND a Healthy Snack Bar?
It depends on what "healthy" means to you. KIND Protein is nut-forward, gluten free, and has solid fiber and modest added sugar. It also contains a protein isolate, glucose syrup, sugar, an added isolated fiber and palm kernel oil, which are markers of a more processed formulation. For more on that distinction, see processed vs. ultra-processed snack bars and our five-point label test.
Here's What Matters
KIND Protein is a nut-forward bar with solid fiber at a low price. If "healthy" means whole-food protein with no isolates, syrups or added oils, plus organic ingredients and real minerals, The Forward Bar goes further at the same protein number.
We'll stay honest about our own limits: The Forward Bar contains almonds and raw honey, so it is vegetarian, not vegan, and not nut-free. It is an everyday whole-food snack, not a meal replacement, not a low-calorie diet bar, and not a protein-maximizing recovery bar.
